2025
In early 2025, I had the opportunity to visit Jamaica, and the experience exceeded my expectations. The warmth and hospitality of the Jamaican people, coupled with the island's breathtaking beauty, left a lasting impression on me. Upon my arrival, I was enveloped by a sense of tranquility that I will always cherish.
During my nine-day stay, I engaged with a group of Rastafarians from the Montego Bay Parish. This experience allowed me to gain insight into their worldview and embrace their natural way of life. To my surprise, I discovered that the Rastafari lifestyle, which I assumed was integral to Jamaican culture, is still marginalized within the community. The legacy of British colonialism, which lasted for approximately 60 years, has left lasting challenges for the Rastafarian community as they strive for a secure place in society.
I was particularly taken aback to learn that it was only in 2015 that children were permitted to wear locs to school, and even then, there have been instances, such as a 2018 case, where a child faced discrimination for this choice. It struck me as ironic to travel from a country where I experience discrimination to another where similar challenges persist.
Despite these issues, Jamaica remains a stunning destination. The people are genuinely welcoming, and the atmosphere is soothing. My time there led me to discover several potential documentary story leads, ensuring that this will not be my last visit to this remarkable island.

Chalice Smoke
My tour guide turned friend, Ambessa, gave me a gift upon my arrival in Jamaica. The gift was a brand new hand-made chalice, and me not knowing anything had to be taught how to use it. I learned that chalice is the cleanest way to indulge your choice of herb. The flame is separated from the herb and burned with coconut charcoal. I’ll let King Ambessa explain the rest below.
