Color grading is a parallel practice for us, alongside the brand work. The retainer roster does not generally accept colorist projects, and the colorist projects do not generally route through the brand pipeline. Two different muscles, two different calendars. Indie features, shorts, and dramatic short-form pieces come in on a project basis, looked at one film at a time.

/ Node 01, Skin Tones and Portraiture Tree · IN → NR → EXP → SKIN → WB → SAT → MASK → VIGNETTE → OUT

The node tree built around real skin in real light.

Every project starts with a conversation about the look. Reference images, a director's deck if one exists, the cinematographer's intent, anything the editor has left in the timeline that points at where the film wants to live. From there the grade runs in passes, a primary pass for balance and contrast, secondaries for skin, sky, and any color story the film is building, a final pass for the look, and a deliverables pass for whatever the festival or platform requires. ACES is the underlying pipeline, the suite is calibrated, the monitor is the reference.

/ Node 02, Night Grade and Mood Tree · DENOISE → BALANCE → EXP → CST → HDR → HSV → HSL → FILM → SHARPEN → LUT

The full feature tree, built for the night.

The work is mostly indie features, dramatic shorts, and short-form drama in the festival pipeline. Projects do not have to be at a particular budget level to be a fit. What matters is that the film has a director and a cinematographer who are speaking the same language about the look, and an editor who has left a clean timeline. Commercial and brand work goes through the brand pipeline, not the colorist roster, because the schedules are different shapes and the rate cards are not the same.

/ Node 03, Most Recent, Best Grade Tree · IN → NR → EXP → WB → SAT → MASK → TEXTURE → OUT

The grade we are most proud of right now.

Most projects turn around in two to three weeks of grading time, depending on length and complexity. Remote review is in the workflow from day one, with calibrated reference images and short proof clips delivered as the grade progresses. In-person sessions are available in San Diego, with the option to bring a Los Angeles or remote director into the suite as the project requires. Deliverables follow the festival or platform spec, with archival masters held in cold storage for a year unless the project asks for longer.

Session Notes · Common Questions

Common questions, straight answers.

  • SESS · 01Roster fit

What kinds of projects do you grade?

Indie features, dramatic shorts, short-form drama, and festival-pipeline projects. Music videos and commercial work occasionally, when the project's look is unusual enough to be interesting. Brand and corporate work is graded through the brand pipeline, not the colorist roster.

  • SESS · 02Pipeline

Are you set up for ACES?

Yes. Full ACES pipeline, calibrated suite, DaVinci Resolve, and the monitor we grade on as the reference. The pipeline is documented and the IDTs and ODTs are matched to whatever camera the project shot on.

  • SESS · 03Conform

    Can you grade remotely?

Yes. Remote review is built into the workflow, with calibrated reference clips and proof passes delivered as the grade progresses. In-person sessions are available in San Diego when the schedule allows.

  • SESS · 04LUT design

Do you handle deliverables and DCP creation?

Yes. Festival-spec masters, platform-spec encodes, and DCP delivery for theatrical exhibition when the project requires it. The deliverables pass is a separate scope item from the grade itself.

  • SESS · 05Booking

    How is grading priced?

Project rate, anchored to length and complexity. Short-form drama is priced separately from feature-length work. The rate is independent of the brand retainer roster.
